Content creator is the biggest growing industry of 2022, powered by growth of technology and boosted by the pandemic forcing us to find new ways of communicating. Benefitting from this the most are the fast pace consumption platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Youtube and etc. Platforms that greatly rely on content creators themselves to provide for them yet their lack of benefit and regulation impact negatively to these creator’s welfare and emotional health.
This project looks into these issues and how a motion designer can help improve a content creator’s ‘working environment’ and rights. The specific target audience for this project is the digital art community though it’s desired that in the future, it would encompass a diversity of content creators and the medium that they have chosen.
Li Jin: The Case for Universal Creative Income
My research includes interviews, online reference, observations and personal experience as well. Articles that really made is mark include Li Jin's; The Case for Universal Income. I was also looking at progressive projects such as Pinterest Creator Funding.
From this research, I manage to draw pain points from quantity above quality; plagiarism; bullying; being under pressure; and the platforms themselves who heavily rely on these creators yet give little in return.
On the other hand, my case studies on Pinterest Creator Code shows that when given achievable incentive, creators and platform equally thrive. The effect of this win-win cycle was Pinterest having a much richer content that leads to more user engagement. It doesn't only highlight that it can be done but also the benefits of it.
Concluding my research, I knew that what the project needed was three things.
It’s important to not just raise awareness about the issue within CC community but also enabling the viewers to join the discussion. The goal is to make and inspire others to act in support for CC in emotion and actions.
We need to acknowledge the labor behind the scene so it minimizes the chances of exploitation by agency and platforms.
CCs should organize and advocate for better treatment and pay, opening communication channels regarding pay, contract agreements.
To incorporate said ingredients above, I chose to use an animated video with real life accounts. As an ode to my illustrator communities and origin, I wanted the look of the graphic to have charcoal texture emphasis on forms and colors and it has to be hand drawn. Below are some experiments taken in developing the style.
After experimentation and having the script. I decided to make an animated storyboard to better plan the final. During this stage is where I get lots of my feedback such as the dog not really fitting the scene or certain layout would be better done differently. But it's a good stage of experimentation.
The animation itself was hand drawn frame by frame in Photoshop. The script itself was derive from real life accounts from interviews and voiced out by 2 others and myself to give a sense of togetherness. The storyboard was made based on the script. Changes was made throughout as feedback was given.
There still much to say left about this project. If you would like to learn more about it you can download the pdf below. Thank you for your attention :)
